Gold and silver coin sale diverge

The Perth Mint’s latest minted coin and bar sales are out, which reflect retail investor interest. In silver we posted our fifth best month in four years, although the September figure probably should be ignored because we were stocking up for months beforehand for the launch of our silver Kangaroo coin and didn’t expect to sell that all in one go. 1. Hi Bron, I seem to recall that the US Mint capped production (either had long production halts during the year or stopped production/sales early [before the end of the year]) for Gold Eagles for at least a few of those years, so I'm not sure if the conclusions you are drawing from the graphs are valid since total sales may not be indicative of real demand, but more of production (or blank supply chain) capacity/capability.

Reuters is reporting today that the US Mint is has sold out of 2015 Gold Eagles and wont be producing or selling any more.

    1. Yes there have been periods of rationing but I don't consider them to be long enough to make a material dent on the annual sales figures.

US Mint always stops production towards the end of the year of that year's coin but they don't stop producing coins they are just making and stocking up on 2016 coins which they sell a heap of in January

  2. I took a quick look through some old forum posts on this subject and found this (and this is just one example):

A month long disruption in supply seems pretty significant to me.

    1. That link isn't working for me. I would note that most of those rationing periods affected both gold and silver, so would not account for any difference between the metals.

  3. I guess the rationing is a necessary step at the end of each year and the decline in the profit and loss margin will be compensated at the start of the subsequent year. Nevertheless, the finance sector always has its own plunges and rises in order to create a nice balance.
